but I swear I can hear June Carter in the choir backing on "I Heard The Bells...", so given that Maybelle Carter is playing autoharp on the album, the Carters are probably singing backup on that. I agree, the early 60s were a time when easy-pop/folk-pop producers were sticking very deep orchestral sounds behind songs and it got super overdone.

There's an interesting, if a bit of a hagiography, on Cash released in 1970 (on my Birthday no less) and in one candid scene he's in the studio and they play a loop back and it's just wham, full strings and backing choir at the same level as his guitar and vocals, and he immediately says to take it way down. The producer or audio engineer says something like "Yeah, I thought we'd put it all in there and then you could, you know, just sort of say what parts you wanted toned down", which is probably ass-covering for "Oops, everyone's been doing this for the last 6-7 years, guess you didn't like that."

Thank you, Gary Gygax.
