Especially in the early seasons, the book and show are very much in sync. After I watched season 1 and 2, I actually tried to go and read book 1, but it was so similar and fresh in my head, I couldn't get into the idea of 2000 pages of stuff I already knew.

I ended up going back and reading them after I'd watched I think season 4, once it was further from my memory and I was more invested in the story.

There are definitely some legitimate reasons to watch the show also, I'd say. There are some moments in the show which the book really can't do justice to, simply because it's hard to beat a well done battle.
