Apple's walled garden has higher walls, you are certainly more locked in to their way of doing shit. However the side effect is that they can, and do, force carriers to allow updates directly from them for all their shit.

Google's walls are much lower. If you want to install apps from the web rather than just their store, it is as simple as checking a box in settings to allow it, and modified OSes are easy to find. However that lack of tight control means that you have shit like my V40 that is a year behind on OS updates because LG and T-Mobile are dicking around.
