When I did mine it was about 14 years ago. The dealer handled sending the old knife back and was in fact so confident that they'd get a replacement for their stock they had no problem handing me a new one right off the shelf.

In the modern age of retail, this is probably no longer the practice.

FWIW this guy returned 3 broken 30-year old knives back in 2014 and the company replaced all three. That's not really something I would expect to happen.
