the brake light circuit is closed when you press on the pedal, but it stays closed (lights on) unless you have that grommet type thing that fits in a hole in the brake pedal arm. It's kind of tough to work up under there because it's such a tight space. This is for a Ford I believe, but all non-hydraulic brake light switches work more or less the same. the part is called a "bumper" and I found one at the hardware store but it wasn't quite the right size so I had to shave it down with a knife so it would fit in the hole. I probably damaged it in the process because it failed pretty quickly.
