mine are like four and five generations older than the one below, both get a lot of use. One has a pair of 10TBs, the other is 6TB.
One is a backup target for the five or so computers in the house (and if I can ever figure it out, the target for video recording)
The other is my media: Blu-ray rips, mp3s, camera raw files, etc.
For your use case re: off hours and so forth, I think Time Machine runs constantly, and maybe deltas out like OneDrive? Papa's your guy here.
Btw, you can use OneDrive on a NAS as its primary residence. If the files live there primarily, then they're protected a couple ways. I always park my OneDrive folder on the NAS.
