My view is plagiarized from George Lakoff's book Moral Politics, but he makes a compelling argument that conservatives see wealthy people as the best of society because, in their moral system, the pursuit of self-interest (i.e. wealth) is virtuous in and of itself. This follows from the principle of self-reliance: that good, upstanding citizens don't take no handouts.

This section of the book sums it up well. Honestly, though, it makes me cringe.

    Sycraft had 1,000 monkeys type:
    1) "Let's worry about what happens to the super rich because I'll totally be super rich some day." Seriously a lot of dumbass right wingers think this. They have convoluted stories of how they are going to inherit such and such estate or how they'll make it rich doing whatever and thus need to make sure taxes are low when that happens.

    2) "I don't care how bad things are for me, they just have to be worse for black people." This is a big one, and there's been research validating that indeed people think this way. They are against social programs that can help them if they believe said program will help out minorities more. They don't care if they are getting shit on, so long as they get to shit on minorities. It is all about feeling superior, not having an actual good quality of life.
