USB to car i/o header (usually behind the dash, but still very accessible), plug in to your laptop, and dump the codes.
If I had had such a thing when the VW croaked on us in St. Augustine a couple years back I would have not panicked, just bought a cheap set of coils and put those on and carried on instead of the $400+ I had to spend to get the car repaired (which wrecked our mini-vacation ).
But yeah getting a reader is a definite good investment, because if you find out it's just a $50 part vs. $500 at the dealership, y'know?
Thank you, Gary Gygax.
