I never think about it. Seriously. I never throw a single message away.....

I have a policy that moves all messages over two years old to an online archive--and no kidding that archive also includes an old shared/departmental account that is no longer active but goes back 7 years before I stared. So I can go back almost 20 years with that one. There are references to the fucking Blaster Worm in that one.
Having access to old emails has bailed me out more than once. And in a couple cases, that information helped solve some IT mysteries. Like "Why the fuck is this shit still configured this way?"
The old emails sometimes provide clues if not outright answers and in one case prevented some new IT policy or project from fucking over a customer big time.
Came in handy during a data migration. Had I not had the archive to figure out who some stuff belonged to it might have been deleted, but instead we got it migrated to some new research storage and the customer was very happy. Turns out there was a 20-year retention policy in the original grant.
