very brief and occasional episodes at first--only those closest to him would even notice.

But by the time he was president, those episodes started happening more often and they'd last longer.

I remember the first debate with Mondale in 84 where he seemed completely lost and struggled to answer simple questions. The consensus was that he got his ass kicked and looked like a buffoon.

But by at next debate two weeks later, he regained his composure and then the consensus was that it was Mondale who got his ass kicked.

I think during the second half of his second term, he started really falling apart. During the Iran Contra hearings he was almost incoherent.
