But you're not actually risking much, if anything at all. Running through a few examples.

Worst case, let's say on the first month of a year something bad happens and you get a $25k bill.

Your existing plan:
You've paid $800 on your premium, you pay $2500 for the deductible, the insurance pays the rest, and you continue to pay your premiums for the next 11 months at $800 per month. You've paid $12,100 for the year.

The plan Tenneck has outlined:
You've paid $150 on your premium, you pay $10k for the deductible, the insurance covers the rest, and you continue to pay your premiums for the next 11 months at $150 per month. Your total for the year is $11,800.

What if your total medical bills for the year come to $5000?

Option 1.
You pay $9600 in premiums, and $2500 in deductible for a total of $12,100.

Option 2.
You pay $1800 in premiums and $5000 on the deductible for a total of $6800.

What if your medical bills for the year are just $1000?

Option 1.
You pay $9600 in premiums and $1000 on the deductible for a total of $10,600.

Option 2.
You pay $1800 in premiums and $1000 on the deductible for a total of $2800.

Look again at that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
